Fabricated Metal: The Right Approach for Every Part

Volume, Complexity, and Consistency.

These are the three pivotal factors that will guide you on how to approach choosing the right method of fabrication for your metal parts. But remember, you don't have to do it alone.
With a legacy of over 180 years in metal, Ryerson offers a collaborative partnership on your fabrication expedition.
Our capabilities extend far and wide, synchronizing seamlessly with every product in our catalog. Whether it's precision straight line cutting, profile cutting, bending and forming, precise machining, flattening for perfection, surface cleaning, or welding and painting—we bring a comprehensive suite of processing capabilities and expertise.
It all hinges on the specific part at hand. Below are three examples that showcase our approach to tailor-fitting your project.

Fabricating Metal Tube and Bar

In this example, we take a two-inch square carbon tube with a 3/16-inch wall thickness. The manufacturer orders this part in approximately 120 or 240 pieces. This volume demands a processing method that combines accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency. The goal is to find the best way to manufacture this part while minimizing manual intervention and maximizing the quality of the finished product.

Fabricating Metal Sheet

This example focuses on a quarter-inch thick, high-strength, low-alloy steel sheet. The manufacturer will need approximately 1,000 pieces of this component annually. The challenge is to analyze the drawing and select the optimal manufacturing method, considering both precision and cost. This video focuses on the initial cutting process, leaving the forming process on a press brake for a later stage.

Fabricating Metal Plate

In this example, we explore three primary options for cutting metal plate: laser, plasma, and oxy-fuel. Each method brings its unique advantages and capabilities for this unique metal plate part.
